ArtWorks Art Party

February 17, 2010

This last Saturday night one of the instructors at ArtWorks held an art party.  ArtWorks is an art center in Edmonds, WA where I am the Director.   It was really fun to drive up to the building and see a myriad of tiny red lights all across the windows.   This was a bit of a clue for what was to come: little surprises and sparks of fun.

The event was really cool.  Ken Morrison, graphite painter and graphic novel illustrator, transformed the space to display his work and provide some entertainment in this first of a progression of art experiences.

Each person was issued a small paper that had questions from the ‘Book of Questions’ by Gregory Stock, P.H.D. and another sheet of what there was to offer in various places in the building.

If you’ve never heard of the ‘Book of Questions’ it’s full of unusual scenarios, stuff we never talk about, where no answer is exactly right but each of us may respond differently or surprisingly.  For example, one of the questions was  “If you could spend one year in perfect happiness but afterward would remember nothing of the experience would you do so?  If not, why not?”  Another was “If a new medicine were developed that could cure arthritis but cause a fatal reaction in 1 percent of those who took it, would you want it to be released in public?”.

These interesting questions generated a lot of conversation between friends and strangers alike.  Ken is going to scan them in and use them in a future display piece at one of the next art experiences that he is orchestrating at ArtWorks.

One of the things that Ken wanted to do was to have balsa wood airplanes hanging from the ceiling that we could all play with.  So he strung some up.  Then he wound one of the propellers up and the darned thing flew straight up and over the light housing in the ceiling making it out of reach after that.  So he took them down.  Oh well.  It was a great idea and would have been fun if only the planes stayed where we could all access them.  While there were a few technical glitches like this it was still good.

There was a graphic novel video on a large screen t.v. that was really fun to watch.  One of the other instructors from ArtWorks told me that seeing that video was worth coming for all by itself.

The next art party will be in early April and at this point includes tango dancers and shadow puppets.  This series of art experiences will culminate in a big splash event in November. I can’t wait!
