New Pictures of My Work

This is the book cover of an altered book on the challenges in design.

I have an altered book that I use to work out and illustrate the challenges of design.  Each page has some specific issue in design that it overcomes (or maybe not).  A lot of it is about formal and informal balance with smatterings on seemingly clashing color and pattern combinations.  In any art, design should be the highest consideration.   Evoke whatever it is that you wish to in your work but know that it has to be done through the language of design.  Your work will be more successful when you understand design and it’s elements more intimately.

For some people, design is second nature.  This isn’t true of everyone but the more you study design, the more second nature it will be for you, too.

Birds are part of my life every day.  I notice when I don’t hear birds in a day and the day isn’t complete without them. They are dear creatures to me and I think that they are very important to have around.  They’re like natural yard art!

One winter we had a flock of Grosbeaks at our bird feeders.  They were all dramatically bright yellow and black and had come up from Mexico and other Southern realms.

Our neighbor asked me about the “parrots” in our yard.   I don’t understand not knowing about the birds.  Their behaviors are fascinating.  I just love to watch them and hear them.

The window crops the image of the page before successfully so adds interest.  Compare the image from the pages before the Bird Window.  It’s interesting in it’s own way but having the gothic arched window cropping it makes it even more interesting.  Cropping is the one single thing that can generate interest in a design.  Play with it! I DO!

Chinese Theater

Chinese Theater

Chinese Theater is created out of  bits and pieces of images and papers.  It reminds me of being at the Beijing Opera House in China.   In China, the opera can go on for days and days.  Because of this, you are seated at a table and periodically served food and tea.  The tea pots they use to serve with have to reach across a table  or further so they have 3 foot long spouts.  The server stands in the aisle, 4-7 feet away from the tea cup that they are pouring tea into.  The tea arcs across the space and right into this little teeny tea cup.  Without a splash or a spill, just very efficient.  A practiced skill to be sure but just as amazing as the acrobatics in the opera itself!  I’ll never forget that.
